Fuel Smart-It's National Nutrition Month!
Sue A. James, MS, RD, LDN
Food and drink are fuel for the body. Eating a variety of food and hydrating daily is fueling smart. Here are some Nutrition Challenges for National Nutrition Month:
Nutrition Challenge 1: Eat something green every week

Eat a Granny Smith apple with lunch instead of a red apple.

Eat celery with peanut butter for a green after school snack.
Try adding peas or lima beans to tomato or vegetable soup for an extra nutritional boost.
Add green peppers to scrambled eggs or egg whites at breakfast.
Nutrition Challenge 2: Drink more water

Keep a glass of water by your bed. Start the day by drinking a glass of water in the morning.
When passing any water fountain at school take a sip of water from it
Hydrate with a glass of water before going out to play
Before drinking a soda, drink a glass of water.
Nutrition Challenge 3: Limit the cookies and candy
Instead of eating candy for a treat, try eating low fat yogurt with fruit.
Cereal with skim milk is a healthy after school snack.
Have some string cheese and an apple after a practice or a game as a nutritious snack.
Eat fresh fruit instead of a cookie at least once a week.
