Quarterback Kurt Warner has announced today that he is retiring from football. Warner suffered another concussion in his last game, a 45-14 loss in the NFC Division Championship to the eventual NFC Champion New Orleans Saints. Warner joined the St. Louis Rams in 1998 after brief stints in the Arena League and NFL Europe. In 1999, when Rams starting QB Trent Green went down with an injury early in the season, Warner was given the starters job. Not only did he proceed to have one of the best seasons any QB has ever had, he earned the honor of NFL MVP, won Super Bowl XXXIV and earned Super Bowl MVP honors as well. He went back to the Super Bowl with the Rams 2 years later in Super Bowl XXXVI but lost to the amazing Tom Brady and the up and coming New England Patriots. Warner then spent a year with the New York Giants where, after 9 games, he handed the starting job to rookie QB Eli Manning. In 2005, Warner signed with the Arizona Cardinals where he remained until his retirement announced today(1/29/10). Warner led the Cardinals to their first NFC Championship and first Super Bowl appearance ever(Super Bowl XLIII), where they lost in the last :35 to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Warner holds many NFL records and is only the second QB in NFL history to take 2 different teams to the Super Bowl. Next up for Warner will be the Hall of Fame, which he surely deserves. |
