|Be sure to watch the third round of the 2011 NFL Draft starting Saturday at 12pm ET on NFL Network.||Day 2 of the 2011 NFL Draft kicked off with the 33rd pick. The pick initially was to go to the Carolina Panthers, but the Panthers traded this spot to the New England Patriots during last year's draft for Armanti Edwards. With the Patriots holding the 33rd pick and with so many other teams seeking quarterbacks, lots of analysts assumed that the Patriots would use this pick as leverage for another deal. Instead, they took Ras-I Dowling, a cornerback from the University of Virginia.
Though the pick may have surprised some people, it's clear that Dowling has real talent. As a freshman at Virginia, he played in 12 games. In those games he made 44 tackles and two interceptions. In his sophomore year, he made 43 tackles and led the team with three interceptions. By 2010, he was Second-team All-American and First-team All-ACC.
