The NFL training camps have started, which means that all 32 NFL teams are back in action. The most exciting part of camp is, if there is one, a quarterback battle. Here are the top 3 quarterback battles.
1. Cleveland's Quarterback- Brian Hoyer vs Johnny Manziel-
This is the most intriguing quarterback battle. Brian Hoyer played in limited action last year and won three games and so far seems to have the favor of the coaching staff. He's also a journeyman who played on multiple teams but never started as the quarterback before going to Cleveland. Johnny Manziel, on the other hand, is the most exciting quarterback, or player, to ever enter the NFL. Offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, who developed Robert Griffin III, could make the offense very dangerous by optimizing Manziel's running talents. Hoyer looks like he is the favorite thus far, but fan favorite Manziel could take the starting job if he cuts down on his errors and gets into less off-the-field trouble.
2. Houston's Quarterback- Ryan Fitzpatrick vs Case Keenum vs Tom Savage-
Houston looked set at quarterback last year until Matt Schaub was benched after throwing a pick-6 in multiple games. Schaub is gone, while Case Keenum, his replacement last year, is back in the mix for a starting job. Keenum was below average in his starts and he will need to get a lot better to win the job again. He is facing competition from veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick and rookie Tom Savage. Fitzpatrick had a great start with the Buffalo Bills a few years ago but has faded into backup status. He had a lot of subpar playing time with the Titans last year after Jake Locker went down, but he has been tabbed as the favorite by head coach Bill O'Brien. The x-factor is rookie Tom Savage, the team's fourth round pick and former Pittsburgh Panther, who could emerge as the starter if one of the quarterbacks is hurt.
3. Minnesota's Quarterback- Matt Cassel vs Teddy Bridgewater vs Christian Ponder
After a terrible, Matt Schaub-esque season with the Kansas City Chiefs, Matt Cassel took over midseason for the Vikings and made something out of a disappointing season. The quarterback that he took over for, Christian Ponder, is still on the roster but there is almost no chance that he will even make the team after training camp. Former Louisville Cardinal Teddy Bridgewater is the biggest threat to Cassel; the last pick of the 1st round of this year's draft has done well in training camp and the Vikings seem to be a good fit for him. If Bridgewater can continue to develop under new offensive coordinator Norv Turner, he could be the starter come Week 1.
