Huh? A punter made the Hall of Fame?
That was the exact reaction when the Oakland Raiders made Ray Guy the first punter ever to be drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft in 1973. Everyone thought the Raiders were crazy.
The Raiders proved they were crazy smart, because Ray guy was crazy good. His booming punts consistently pinned Raiders opponents deep in their own territory, giving the Raiders a decisive edge.
Guy is considered to be the greatest punters of all time and becomes only the second kicker (Jan Stenerud - Kansas City Chief) and the first punter to be elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Ray Guy Career Achievements:
Pro Bowl seven times.
First team All-Pro six times.
NFL 75th Anniversary All-Time Team.
NFL 1970s All-Decade Team.
First punter in NFL history inducted to the HOF.
