WHAT CHEERLEADING HAS TAUGHT ME ABOUT LIFEMany young girls (and boys!) begin their journey as cheerleaders yelling "offense" and "defense" chants at practices on the lawns of their elementary schools without even knowing what those words mean! However, they are indirectly being taught life's most valuable lessons: the importance of showing up, what it means to be a "team" member and that every individual has a voice and can make a difference. FIELD VS. STAGEChoreographing for the field is different from choreographing for the theater, film or television. On paper, field choreography looks more mathematical and "showy" vs. stage choreography which is artistic and emotional. However, the two are more alike than one would think... THE VERBAL SMACKDOWNImagine performing in 20-degree weather wearing a short skirt and a tattoo on your face. Then, some fan from the opposing team yells out, "YOU'RE FAT!" PREPARATIONThe music is blaring, the lights are blazing, and you are beaming in the enjoyment of performing. Sometimes it looks as if it is so easy... but there is such calculated preparation that goes into making routines look effortless. INSPIRATION FOR CHOREOGRAPHYI have carried this message with me and before I begin choreographing any project, large or small, I make sure that I have my inspiration. Unfortunately, this isn't always the easiest task. LIFE CHEERLEADERSSeasons come and seasons go. Whether you are in the stands, on the sideline or at home, there is no better cheer than the one that comes from a true friend. "It isn't where you go, but who is beside you." |
