Friday the 13th is here and spooky and creepy superstitions start to kick in. Some of the most superstitious people in the country play in the NFL. Players will wear socks without washing them for the entire season because they think they are lucky, some will eat the same meal before every game. There’s even the dreaded Madden Curse that is based on who graces the cover of the popular video game.

Colts QB Peyton Manning always reads the game program cover to cover before each game. Bears LB Brian Urlacher likes to eat two chocolate-chip cookies before each game. Jaguars DT John Henderson demands that the trainer slap him in the face to get him ready for a game. Former Falcons RB Jamal Anderson had to touch all four corners of the field in his pre-game warm up before he was ready to play. Former Falcons and Cowboys CB Deion Sanders needed to lay out his uniform on the floor of the locker room – headband, jersey, pants socks and shoes – before he would go to take a shower in his boxers. Players have always had their superstitions that made them feel comfortable and ready to play.

The Madden Curse is one of the biggest superstitions in sports. Some may laugh at it, but every player, since the first player graced the cover in 1999, has felt the power of the curse. Former 49ers RB Garrison Hearst was the first player on the cover in 1999 and suffered a bad ankle break that year. Daunte Culpepper, Ray Lewis, Donovan McNabb and Shaun Alexander are among the players that have been victim to the curse by either injury or rough seasons after they appeared on the Madden cover.
