THE ICE BOWL

If you’ve ever gone outside and played football with your friends in cold weather, you know that it is much harder to play than when it’s warm out. Your hands get cold and the ball is suddenly harder to catch and throw. The ground gets hard and slick, which makes it difficult to run on. This year in the NFC Conference Championship, the Packers and the Giants game reached -23 degrees but that was not even the coldest game in Packers history.

In 1967, the championship game between the Green Bay Packers and the Dallas Cowboys was played in conditions even worse than you can imagine. The temperature, with wind chill, was recorded at -48 degrees. The referees couldn’t even use their whistles because they would get their lips would get stuck. It was arguably the toughest conditions to play under, yet produced one of the best football games ever.

The game was a back-and-forth battle that had the Packers trailing the Cowboys 17 – 14. With less than one minute to play, the Packers had the ball and were only 32 yards away from the end zone and the chance to win. Bart Starr led the team all the way to the 1-yard line, but the Packers were stopped twice from running it in. On the third down, Starr decided to run the ball in himself and scored the game-winning touchdown with 16 seconds remaining. The Packers won the game 21-17. That game, nicknamed the Ice Bowl, is considered one of the greatest NFL games ever played, given the unbelievably harsh weather conditions.
