Gates was born in Detroit, MI on June 18, 1980. He played college football for two seasons at Kent State, and helped lead the basketball team to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament in 2002.

Antonio has played in the NFL for six seaons, making the Pro Bowl for five years in a row (2004-08). In 2004, He set the record for most touchdown catches by a tight end in NFL history with 13.

Last season, Gates was part of a Chargers team that won the AFC West title on the last day of the regular season defeating the Broncos 52-21.
